Rental Car Torched

Van overturned; brush fires abound

INDIAN HEAD (July 21) ---  The Maryland Fire Marshal’s office reports that someone set a rental car afire outside a residence on Mattingly Ave. in Indian Head at about 6 am on Saturday, July 21st.

The fire caused $12,000 damage to the 2006 Pontiac Grand Am, according to Deputy State Fire Marshal Jeffery Frye.

Six firefighters from Indian Head responded toe the blaze and brought the fire under control in about 10 minutes.

Tips about who torched the vehicle can be made to the State Fire Marshal’s Office at 443-550-6832.

In other fire and rescue news, one person was flown from the scene of a single car wreck on Rt. 4 in Huntingtown where a van overturned in late afternoon.

Second District Volunteers responded to a field fire on the Boothe farm in Drayden at about 1 pm while brush units from Bay

District and Hollywood assisted Leonardtown in putting out a large hayfield fire at Maryland Rock.  The fire burned out several acres of land and may have threatened a vehicle.

According to Maryland State Fire Marshal W. Faron Taylor many field and woods fires originate from careless outdoor burning and from carelessly discarded smoking materials.   He urged smokers to not toss cigarette butts from vehicles but to use ashtrays.

Fire Marshal Says Woman Attempted to Torch Neighbors House in Modern Day Hatfield's & McCoy's Feud

LEXINGTON PARK   (July 19, 2007) -- Deputy State Fire Marshals have charged a 33-year-old St. Mary’s County woman in connection with an April 7, 2007 dwelling fire in Lexington Park. Yvette Lee Brooks was charged with first degree arson, second degree malicious burning, and reckless endangerment in the fire that damaged a townhouse at 21533 Old Missouri Avenue in Lexington Park.

The investigation revealed the defendant poured and lit an ignitable liquid onto the front door of the residence occupied by Carol McCarthy. Ms. McCarthy was able to quickly discover and extinguish the 3:30 a.m. fire. Damages were estimated at $500. A neighbor dispute was determined to be the motive for the fire. Brooks was taken into custody earlier today without incident. She remains at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center awaiting a bail review.
