Navy Pitches In to Rescue Boaters

BALTIMORE - Coast Guard and Navy crews teamed up to rescue two people from a grounded sailboat vessel in the Potomac River today.

Rescued were Wayne Holdsworth and Donna Stump.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Baltimore received a report from a Good Samaritan that a 30-foot sailing vessel had gone aground in the Potomac River near Point Lookout.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Inigoes launched and an urgent marine information broadcast (UMIB) was issued. Naval Air Station Patuxent River responded to the UMIB and launched an H-3 Sea King helicopter crew. The crew hoisted Hodsworth and Stump and transported them to Point Lookout Beach.

The Coast Guard boat crew conducted a survivor debrief and confirmed there are no medical concerns.

Holdsworth and Stump had been aground since 7 a.m., due to problems with the vessels radio they could not contact help.

The Coast Guard urges mariners to always wear their lifejackets on the water, carry signaling devices aboard their vessels such as flares, marine band radios and emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRB) and to file a detailed float plan with their friends, family or local marina. A float plan should include the destination, number of people aboard and an estimated time of return.

PEDESTRIAN CRASH DETERMINED TO BE A FALSE REPORT

Prince Frederick, MD:  On Friday, May 16, 2008, at approximately 9:15 AM an alleged personal injury pedestrian crash was reported on Main Street in front of the Circuit Court Building, Prince Frederick, Maryland.  Initial responders believed that Jonathan J. Reid Sr. (46 of Prince Frederick, MD) had been struck by a 2005 Ford SUV as he walked across Main Street.  Numerous Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned and law enforcement officials from the Maryland State Police (Barrack “U”) and the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist Reid and to investigate the incident.  Although Reid purported that he was struck by a truck he exhibited no injuries.  He reported back, neck, hip and lower extremity pain.  Due to Reid’s reported events, he was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital.

Investigation, supported by independent witnesses, confirmed that Reid was not struck by a motor vehicle.  He was observed walking from the Circuit Court Building towards Main Street seconds before the incident.  As a small Ford SUV lawfully traveling south passed through the area.  Reid walked out onto southbound Main Street from between several parked cars.  He was observed to strike the right side of the SUV with his hand/fist near the right rear portion of the truck. As the SUV driver brought his vehicle to a stop to investigate, Reid walked across Main Street, spun around in the road and gently lay down on the street. Reid was not in or near the crosswalk at any time.

Numerous diagnostic tests were completed on Reid at Calvert Memorial Hospital.  No injuries were identified.  Further investigation revealed that Reid had a court obligation this same morning and he was required to appear at about the same time the “crash” occurred.  Further investigation reaffirmed that Reid had staged this personal injury pedestrian crash.  He will be charged with making a false report. The courts and State’s Attorney were notified of this incident.
