Man Went Out in Blaze of Glory

 ST. LEONARD, MD (June 20, 2008)—Maryland State Fire Marshals report that a Calvert County man has succumbed to injuries he suffered at his home. Earl Tyler, 51 years old was rescued from his home by firefighters and deputy sheriff’s after deputies arrived to investigate an assault. The house was located in the 4000 block of St. Leonard Road.

Tyler who was home alone was unresponsive and suffering from severe burns to his body when firefighters found him lying on the living room floor. He was treated at the scene by emergency medical personal where he was stabilized. He was flown by Med-Star to the Washington DC Hospital Center Burn Unit for further treatment. He succumbed from his injuries last night at approximately 5:47 p.m.

Investigators determined that Tyler ignited himself after pouring an ignitable liquid onto his torso. Deputy State Fire Marshals from the State Fire Marshal’s Southern Regional Office and investigators with the Calvert County Criminal Investigative Team are continuing with their investigation in determining a motive why Tyler ignited himself.

His body has been sent to the medical examiners office in the District of Columbia where a forensic examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
