SMITH - (June 8, 2008) The Coast Guard medevaced a woman
suffering from possible heat exposure today in the
Tangier Sound near Smith Island, Md.
At
about 2:25 Saturday, a rescue crew from Coast Guard
Station Crisfield, Md., launched to locate and
rescue Mary John, 75, from Salisbury, Md., after
reports indicated that she was slipping in and out
of consciousness aboard the sailboat she was on with
her husband, George John. Approximately eleven
minutes later, Mary was embarked aboard the rescue
crew's 25-foot response boat and taken back to shore
where she was met by local EMS personnel and taken
to McCready Hospital in Crisfield.
"To
be safe on the water, boaters should always check
the local weather before departing for the day,"
said Petty Officer 1st Class David Race, officer of
the day at Station Crisfield. "Checking the weather
will help you decide if it is safe to go out or what
sort of supplies you might need to take with you,"
he said. "A hot sunny day can be as dangerous as a
stormy day on the water," said Race.
