A fire started in piles of mulch located on the outside of
this condo building traveled up the side into the attic and
spread across the top of the structure. A daytime fire,
other firefighters rushed to the aid of Solomon's and helped
them get their own engines out of the firehouse just a block
away from the fire.

Compounding the problem with this fire was the use of sprinklers
which were the subject of a recall. ST. MARY'S TODAY

Dan Baker, a veteran volunteer with St. Leonard Volunteer Fire
Department, rushed to the Solomon's firehouse and brought out
one of their engines to the fire in the first minutes after the
fire call went out. Daytime staffing is a problem for all local
volunteer departments as few new residents of the area bother to
participate in volunteer fire and rescue organizations.

Bay District assisted on this fire as did St. Leonard and
Hollywood, the closest responding companies to Solomon's first
due area. Prince Frederick, Dunkirk, Huntingtown, Benedict
and Leonardtown also responded.

The fire simply rushed across the attic area of the building
turning the entire structure into a burning wreck.

Fire Wrecked Landmarks
In 2006 fire again struck at Solomon's Island, this time
leveling Bowens Inn and Lighthouse Inn, again with high winds
chasing the flames and the fire occurring during daytime causing
a diminished response due to not enough volunteers available.
