Rescued was Julio Moreno, 49.
The Coast Guard was notified
via cell phone by crewmembers aboard the tug Hoss at
1:19 p.m. that a crewmember had injured his right
hand a few days before while working on a running
light and was now suffering from swelling in his
right arm and elbow. A rescue crew from Coast Guard
Station St. Inigoes, Md., was deployed to the scene
and arrived within 26 minutes of initial
notification. The Coast Guard crew then transferred
the man aboard and transported him to Point Lookout
State Park in Scotland, Md., where he was met by
local EMS.
"We were conducting training in
the area when we got the call," said Petty Officer
2nd Class Jonathon Lee, the officer of the day at
Coast Guard Station St. Inigoes. "We had two boats
in the area, and that is why we were able to respond
so quickly to the medevac."
The Coast Guard urges mariners
to carry marine band radios onboard their vessels.
In the event of an emergency, a marine band radio is
a reliable way to communicate with other vessels or
rescuers. Cell phones are not recommended for use
due to gaps in coverage and limited battery life.
